Ensuring Climate-Resilient Health Protection for Women and Adolescent Girls in Coastal Bangladesh

On Saturday 6 September 2025, in the coastal region of Padmapukur Union (in Shyamnagar Upazila, Satkhira District), a discussion forum titled “Ensuring Climate-Resilient Health Protection for Women and Adolescent Girls” was organized by Children Watch Foundation. The coastal region of Satkhira is identified as one of the most vulnerable areas in Bangladesh when it comes to climate change facing recurring hazards such as cyclones, salinity intrusion, flooding and river-erosion. These events severely affect livelihoods, infrastructure, health services and in particular the well-being of women and adolescent girls.

Key speakers, including the CWF’s Chairman Shah Israt Azmery and Treasurer Afroza Akter, emphasized the need for raising awareness and building health-protection systems that are resilient to climate hazards.  They highlighted that unless awareness and local resilient systems are strengthened, the twin burden of climate risk and gendered health vulnerabilities will continue to threaten lives and wellbeing in the region. Other speakers included school and madrasa teachers such as the headmaster of Chandnimaikha MM Secondary School, Mohsin Hossain, the headmaster of Gabura Gopal Laxmi Memorial Secondary School, SM Yasminur Rahman Lincoln, and assistant teacher at Pakhimara Aminia Women’s Madrasa, Mawlana Azmal Hossain. They stressed the importance of raising awareness and building systems that can withstand climate impacts.

By bringing together community leaders, educators, and women’s stakeholders in one of Bangladesh’s most climate-exposed areas, the event aimed to elevate the conversation from awareness to action encouraging local voices to lead the transformation needed for resilience.
